Photoshop is a fantastic and highly-powered image editing application, but it
does have its limits. The most prevalent of these, of course, is that it
is primarily a 2D application and lacks comprehensive 3D abilities. That
is not to say, however, that it cannot be used to create convincing 3D effects.
Just follow this tutorial and be enlightened...
 |
Step 1: Create a blank 200 by 200px document with
a white background, and use the horizontal Type Tool to create a single
letter. In my case I've used the 'Bernard MT Condensed' font at size 150.
Don't worry if you don't have this particular typeface - just select
something with a solid blocky look (It will show off the effect to its
fullest potential). |
 |
Step 2: With the text layer selected in the
layers palette, select Layer > Rasterize > Text. Then add a
little individuality to your work by clicking on Edit > Transform >
Perspective. Drag the corners around until you have achieved the
perspective effect you desire, and press ENTER to finalize the change.
Complete the effect by choosing Edit > Transform > Scale and pulling
the top portion down a little. Press ENTER once more. |
 |
Step 3: Once you have finished transforming your
text, run Filter > Stylize > Emboss and enter the following
settings:
Angle: 100
Height: 5px
Amount: 60%
Then press the OK button to render the changes. |
 |
Step 4: Hold CTRL and click your text layer to
form a new selection around the object. Now progressively duplicate the
layer upwards by holding down the ALT key on the keyboard and tapping the
UPWARDS CURSOR ten times. Et voila - a simple yet convincing 3D
effect! |
 |
Variations: It should be remembered, of course,
that this fake 3D effect is not complete in itself and needs further
personalisation before it looks professional. Layer effects are particularly
good additions, as the example to the left shows. Also remember that you
aren't limited to text. In fact, any solid shape will work just as
well. |
